Plans for 450 new homes near Royal Wootton Bassett have triggered fears doctors surgeries, schools and local infrastructure will be overloaded.
Developer David Wilson Homes has made an outline application for the site east of Woodshaw, which recently went through a public consultation.
Along with the homes, the plan is for a school, a new parking area and green spaces like meadows and community orchards.
There are also big changes to surrounding roads proposed, including a new three-arm roundabout on Swindon Road to the north of the site with new T junctions on the western and southern sides.
In addition, a new T-junction from the west of the site and a new T-junction from the south of the site.
But they have been met with opposition from townspeople, especially on the Royal Wootton Bassett Community Facebook page.
One said: “This has got to stop. Please no more houses in this beautiful town. We have hardly any green belts left and the infrastructure is bursting at the seams. “We need more than a primary school, ie: doctors surgeries, so therefore pharmacies. The secondary school is not big enough now as it is. Stop turning Bassett into a city. It is no longer is a “quaint” market town.”
Another said: “The traffic is already bad coming out of Woodshaw up to junction16, this will only make it 10 times worse. Really can’t see how this can go ahead.”
And another added: “Can’t get in at the doctors as things stand. What the Hell!”
The developer said it will create improved links to walk and cycle into Bassett town centre, including a new signal pedestrian crossing.
The new parking area would include electric vehicle charging spaces, along with bicycle parking and the provision for a park and ride, which allows you to park and then head into the centre by bus.
The proposals include around two hectares of land for a new primary school.
Subject to planning permission, it will be decided with Wiltshire Council whether the school should be built by David Wilson Homes or the land transferred to the council.
The development will be 40 per cent affordable housing, including a combination of shared ownership and affordable rented properties A community drop-in event was held on Tuesday November 15 at The Memorial Hall.
