A council committee meeting scheduled for the same day as a crunch World Cup match has been cancelled.

Members of Swindon Borough Council's audit committee had been scheduled to meet on Tuesday, November 26, convening just an hour before England play Wales in their deciding group stage match at the Qatar World Cup.

The committee is set up to examine the way the authority manages its risk, particularly financial, and how the council manages itself, its projects and the way it does business.

It is a small committee of five councillors, three Conservatives and two labour.

There are four men on the committee and one woman.

The match between the two home nations, a repeat of their Euro 2016 match with saw the Three Lions triumph 2-1, could end up deciding whether one or both of the teams progress to the knockout stages.

A spokesman for Swindon Borough Council said that was purely coincidental and the meeting was pulled because there weren't enough reports for the committee to justify a meeting.

England got their World Cup campaign underway with a 6-2 victory over Iran, with Bukayo Saka scoring twice.

Meanwhile, Wales fought back from 1-0 down against the USA to draw 1-1 after a late Gareth Bale penalty.

England and Wales both play their second group stage match on Friday, with Gareth Southgate's men playing USA and Rob Page's side up against Iran.
