ONGOING roadworks on a busy Swindon route have closed off more lanes.
This is part of Swindon Borough Council's project to remove the Kirby Close subway under Queen's Drive, near New College, and replace it with a new signalised crossing.
The carriageways in both directions between New College and Coate Water now narrow to just one lane each while resurfacing and other work - such as footpath widening, installing new kerbs and making new drainage connections - is being carried out by contractors Knights Brown Construction.
Previously, this closure was only in force in the direction away from the town centre.
Earlier this year, the public notice for the planned underpass closure received 125 responses, of which 120 were against the proposals with only five in support. But councillors failed in a bid to get the decision to remove them called in.
A temporary speed limit is in place which requires motorists to slow down from 40mph to 20mph while traveling along and merging into the narrower coned-off stretches of the road.
Work to remove the subway started in August.
