Maxwell Street, Lorne Street and Tennyson Street have all been closed whilst an investigation takes place.
A cordon of around 100m is currently in place.
It is currently unclear how long the roads will be closed.
Residents have not been evacuated but told to stay inside, according to one source.
Army personnel have been spotted at the scene with the focus of the investigation currently being centred on the old school in Maxwell Street.
Plans have been approved to turn the building into a block of flats.
The old school was built in the 1890s but the construction ran out of money.
