Swindon Borough Council has said it is providing its "full support" to a school after one of its pupils was killed in an alleged hit and run crash on Friday morning.
The 14-year-old boy died after colliding with a vehicle opposite the Nova Hreod Academy on Akers Way at around 8.20 am.
He was taken to the Bristol Southmead Hospital by air ambulance but later died.
Wiltshire Police has since confirmed a woman in her 50s from Swindon was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
She has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.
A police spokesman said: "A 14-year-old boy has been sadly pronounced dead, despite the best efforts of medical staff, following a road traffic collision in Swindon, yesterday morning.
"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the teenager at this incredibly difficult time, and we would ask that their privacy is respected.
"We are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the tragic incident which took place at about 8.20am on Akers Way when the boy was hit by a car which failed to stop at the scene."
Over the weekend, a memorial was set up at the scene with hundreds of floral tributes from people who wished to pay their respects.
A Ferndale Rodbourne football shirt and a Manchester United scarf, were tied to the railings next to the busy road.
The mood on Sunday morning was sombre and reflective as people gathered to pay their respects.
In a statement, Councillor Oladapo Ibitoye, the borough council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the family and the whole school community at Nova Hreod for their unimaginable loss on behalf of everyone at Swindon Borough Council. We are providing our full support to the school and young people during this incredibly sad time.
“It is clear from all the tributes that have been paid that Swindon has lost a well-liked and much-loved young man and our thoughts go out to everyone lucky enough to have known him. May he rest in peace.”
Akers Way was closed in both directions shortly after the accident happened and remained shut for most of the day while officers investigated the area.
The road closure brought rush hour traffic to a standstill and caused queues tailing back to Moredon Road, Westfield Way and Purton Road.
It reopened to traffic later on in the evening.
