An assistant referee from Wiltshire has made his first appearance at the Men’s Football World Cup in Qatar.

Adam Nunn from Trowbridge called the World Cup “the pinnacle of what you want to achieve” and an “ultimate honour”.

Nunn and fellow assistant Gary Beswick are part of Premier League referee Anthony Taylor’s team at the tournament, and were first called into action for Monday's Group H match between South Korea and Ghana.

It was a fiesty affair, finishing 3-2 to Ghana, with Taylor sending off South Korea manager Paulo Bento after the game finished.

The football official has been part of Taylor’s team for the past five years, officiating the 2020 FA Cup Final and several matches at last summer’s European Championships.

His passion for the job started aged 14 after as he was selected among a group of junior players that Trowbridge Town FC put through an officiating course.

Nunn became a professional official in 2016 and has been involved with 13 Premier League fixtures plus Champions League matches at Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona this season.

Preparation for this year’s World Cup took place at the Team Bath Physio and Sports Science Centre in a plastic indoor chamber heated to more than 30 degrees Celcius, alongside his usual training programme.
