Nova Hreod Academy has been praised for how it has handled the tragic death of one of its pupils.

A 14-year-old boy, who we are not identifying at this time, was hit by a car along Akers Way, just outside the school, on Friday morning and was later confirmed to have died after being airlifted to hospital.

The pupil's death has shocked the community and over the weekend hundreds of people, including classmates and other students of Nova Hreod, began laying flowers at the scene, and now there are hundreds of tributes there for him.

With so many people touched by this incident, parents have now contacted the Adver to praise the academy for encouraging pupils to join in with this, and for other steps that it has taken to ensure that all of its children that have been affected by this are getting the support they need.

One parent, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "My child is in year 7 so he's not as affected by this as a lot of the other children have been. But how Nova Hreod has dealt with this so far has been brilliant.

"They made a great effort to communicate with all of the children and the parents about what is happening and they've helped with social media, making them aware of what's right and wrong, they've supported them with setting up a room with Chaplin in that they can talk to."

In an email sent out to parents, the school detailed what was said during a special assembly it held for each year group on Monday morning to explain what had happened in more detail, that it was okay to be sad and to grieve, and what support was in place for them.

The assembly ended by telling children: "I have been deeply impressed by the way in which you’ve conducted yourselves so far in supporting each other. If you need adult help, we will be here for you because we care about you greatly."

On top of this, the school also warned parents about another crash that took place outside Akers Way at 2pm on Monday involving three cars, and aware that it might cause further distress to the children, arranged for further staff to escort them.

Another parent who didn't want to be named added: "It's so terrible what has happened and we've all felt it, but we really can't fault [Nova Hreod] for what they've done."
