A DRIVER has been arrested after crashing her car into town centre traffic lights.

The accident happened at around 2.45pm on Drove Road. Motorists are being urged to avoid the area as part of the busy route is closed while police clear away the debris from the vehicle and damaged lights.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: "We were called at around 2.45pm on November 29 to Drove Road to a single vehicle RTC after a car collided with a traffic light.

“A woman in her 20s has been arrested on suspicion of being unfit to drive through drink or drugs.

“Recovery is ongoing, and we would urge drivers to avoid the area.”

Firefighters freed a casualty from the vehicle involved in the collision while officers re-directed queues of traffic at the junction near The Merlin pub.

A Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "We received a call at 2.49pm about a road traffic collision on Drove Road, Swindon.

"Crews from Swindon and Stratton attended the incident which involved a single vehicle and set of traffic lights.

"Firefighters assisted one casualty from the vehicle and left with ambulance crews. Our stop came at 3.22pm."
