Wiltshire Police are stepping up their patrols targeting drink and drug drivers over the festive period.
A month long operation by the Road Policing Unit (RPU) will run throughout December.
During this time the RPU will be increasing their patrols and will also run several interactive sessions in the community to explain the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Last Christmas Wiltshire Police arrested 45 suspected drink drivers, and 31 suspected drug drivers, and Acting Inspector Will Ayres has encouraged people to enjoy the festive period safely this year.
He said: “We hold a zero tolerance approach to drink and drug driving all year round, however, we know that as Christmas approaches everyone is getting into the festive spirit.
“While we want everyone to enjoy the festivities, it’s really important that this is done safely.
“Please plan your journey home or have a designated driver within your group. Consuming alcohol or drugs before getting behind the wheel of a car is not worth the risk.
“We see first-hand the devastation felt by families whose loved ones have been killed on our roads and it is difficult to even put into words just how heart-breaking this can be. Please, don’t be responsible for tearing a family apart this Christmas.”
