Patients at Great Western Hospital's Urgent Care Centre had quite the fright when two fire engines turned up and they were asked to leave for their own safety.

Two crews from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue were called to the hospital's emergency department at 5pm on Thursday afternoon after the alarm system was activated when someone thought they could smell burning.

Everyone inside the building was swiftly evacuated and then firefighters carried out a full inspection of the building both internally and externally but did not find a fire, or a source of burning.

After a brief stint outside everyone was allowed back inside.

A spokesperson from DWFire provided a full statement on the incident.

It said: "We were called to the GWH at 5.06pm yesterday after the alarm system was activated. Two crews attended, from Swindon and Stratton; they found the alarm had been raised when someone thought they could smell burning.

"So a full inspection of the affected building was carried out, both internally and externally. Happily, no fire was found so our stop was at 5.38pm and it has been recorded as a false alarm with good intent."

A spokesperson from GWH said: "“Yesterday, patients were evacuated from the Urgent Treatment Centre as a precaution. The Trust’s health and safety team assessed the area and deemed the incident a false alarm. Service resumed very shortly afterwards."
