NEW pooches and their owners have the chance to attend dog training classes with a difference in the town.
Angela Richens, 76, has launched the East Swindon Dog Training Club with a very clear aim for the four-legged friends attending.
“We aim to make obedience fun for dogs and owners,” she said.
“We pride ourselves on being a force free, friendly club that still gets good results using kind methods.”
After a long career of around 30 years, teaching dogs for dance shows, Angela is no stranger to tutoring pets around the town.
“I was teaching agility first and moved over to music as there was quite a demand there at the time,” she said.
Despite dealing with dogs of all varieties on a weekly basis as part of the Swindon Dog Training School, Angela does not currently have a four-legged friend of her own.
“My most recent dog passed away in September,” she said.
“I don’t want to be permanently without a dog and there is likely to be a rescue dog on the horizon for me to look after.”
Angela is aided by a selection of volunteers who alternate per session.
“I do it for the love of doing it and the price will always be kept low as I don’t see it as an income,” she said.
“I love helping people as much as the dogs. Helping owners develop that bond and seeing that change and progress is fantastic.”
The price per session is £5 and all the money from the fees is put back into the club, which is non-profit making.
“We can help any dog at any level as long as there are no major behavioural issues,” said Angela.
“No other training is required for the obedience sessions so if you’re thinking about it, please do get in touch.”
East Swindon Dog Training Club’s sessions are held at St Andrew's Church Centre on Raleigh Avenue, SN33DZ.
The sessions take place three times a week, with heelwork to music beginners’ class on Mondays from 2pm, obedience beginners from 6pm on Fridays, and a later 7pm session on Fridays for those more advanced.
