The owners of retailer Argos have confirmed that there will be no change to their operations in Swindon after announcing the closure of 34 stores.

All stores in the Republic of Ireland are set to close after Sainsbury’s, who own the stores, said that investment in the stores was “not viable”.

Despite the closures, which have lead to nearly 600 job losses, the supermarket chain has confirmed that stores in the county are not under threat.

A spokesman for Sainsbury’s said: “There will be no change to our operations in Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales as a result, where Argos is performing well.“Today’s announcement only relates to Argos stores in the Republic of Ireland.”

Argos stores in the Republic of Ireland will close in June following this week's announcement.

The company has stores at the Sainsbury's supermarkets at Bridgemead and Stratton.

An Argos outlets in the town centre and at Greenbridge Retail Park have closed in recent years.

The Wharf Green branch shut in 2019, while the Greenbridge store followed suit in September 2021 as Argos set up a facility at Sainsbury's in Oxford Road instead.
