SCHOOLS across Swindon and Wiltshire are set to be affected as teachers go on strike over pay.

The first of many strike days planned is taking place on Wednesday, February 1, and already several schools in the county have confirmed that this will have an impact on them.

Teachers do not have an obligation to inform their employers that they will be striking, and colleagues do not need to provide cover or plan lessons for them in their absence.

This means that many schools, who know how many of their teachers are part of the National Education Union (NEU) but not the exact numbers that will be participating in strikes, have prepared for the worst-case scenario by either closing completely or partially closing to certain year groups.

The full list of schools that Adver knows will be affected is as follows:

  • Lyneham Primary School, Chippenham
  • Abbeyfield School, Chippenham
  • Royal Wootton Bassett Academy, Royal Wootton Bassett

Swindon Advertiser: A map showing all of the schools in and around Swindon that will be hit by strike action has been released by the National Education UnionA map showing all of the schools in and around Swindon that will be hit by strike action has been released by the National Education Union (Image: National Education Union)

The union has released an interactive map to showcase the number of schools it believes will be taking part, and from it, you can see that dozens more are included than the ones that have been listed above.

You can view the map here - https://neu.org.uk/strike-map-0

A spokesperson for the NEU added: “NEU members do not want to go on strike – they want to be in the classroom, teaching and supporting our amazing children and young people.

“But there is a crisis of recruitment and retention within the school system. A decade of falling pay is a key reason for this and needs to be addressed by the Government. One in four teachers leave the profession within two years of qualifying; a third within five years. 13 per cent of teachers who qualified in 2019 have quit."

A 'Save our Schools' demonstration is also set to take place with striking teachers congregating at Wharf Green at 11.30am and marching down Commercial Road.
