Work on Moredon Sports Hub in north Swindon could start as early as next month.
And with the construction of the multi-sports facility expected to take about 10 months, it could be ready very early in 2024.
Swindon Borough Council’s cabinet member for leisure Matty Courtliff told members of the council’s scrutiny committee that the project team was working through a list of tenders and had come up with a list of preferred bidders.
He added: “The project team is now moving through the various and necessary steps to formalise funding agreements and let contracts. Works are likely to take 10 months and ideally will commence in March.
The work will transform what is now a large open recreation field with an old pavilion and construct a full size, enclosed floodlit 3G pitch, two further turf football pitches and two cricket pitches and a kilometre-long closed road cycling circuit with a number of internal loops and cross over points – allows for three separate groups to use the track at one time
There will also be a BMX pump track, an enclosed learn-to-ride course for youngsters and the existing croquet lawns will be retained and a new pavilion and improved parking built.
