A stretch of the M4 that had been closed earlier has since reopened but queues are expected to continue into the afternoon.

The M4 westbound between Junction 17 for Chippenham and Junction 18 for Bath had been closed for most of Monday, February 20, after a pedestrian was killed during an early morning collision.

Emergency services were called to the westbound carriageway at approximately 1am on Monday morning following a report that a vehicle had been in collision with a pedestrian.

The pedestrian, a man in his 40s, died at the scene.

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: "His family has been informed and will be supported by specialist trained officers.

"Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

"The driver involved did stop at the scene and is assisting police with our enquiries.”

The road has since reopened following the investigation but drivers should be cautious that traffic queues are likely to remain for the foreseeable future.

A Tweet from National Highways’ South West account said: “Investigation and recovery work is complete.

“The M4 westbound between J17 Chippenham and J18 Bath is fully OPEN. Delays of up to 20 minutes remain in place. Thank you for your patience and please have a safe onwards journey.”
