The search for a new sports arena in Swindon has taken a step forward following the closure of Abbey Stadium.
Swindon Motorsports Ltd has appointed property agent Savills to lead the formal process of identifying and reviewing potential sites for the new home of the Swindon Robins.
Once a suitable site has been found, a planning application will be submitted for a purpose-built motorsports arena that will be capable of hosting speedway, karting, off-roading, and RC racing.
This comes after a call for speedway community members and the general public to send in suggestions for prospective sites to host the new arena was launched in November.
The Speedway team received many responses which highlighted spots that are within a 45-minute journey from Swindon.
Savills will now start work to identify additional sites and conduct a formal assessment of the full range of locations, then provide an overview of the sites that have development potential.
Swindon Speedway chairman and Swindon Motorsports director Terry Russell said: “We have been blown away by the response we have received from Swindon Speedway fans and members of the Swindon community.
“We would like to thank all those who took the time to send in suggestions and comments over the past couple of months.
“We are delighted to see positive progress being made and look forward to moving into the next phase of site identification.
“Savills’ knowledge and expertise will be a vital asset as we continue to move forward in the site identification process, and we look forward to working with them over the coming months.
“By recruiting Savills to carry out a formal investigation on prospective sites, we are one step closer to bringing forward a new site for the Swindon Robins which will put the team on a secure, sustainable footing for future generations to enjoy.
“We are excited about the future, and I personally ask that all Robins fans join us in the effort to identify and secure a new site for Swindon Speedway.”
A spokesperson for Savills added: “Savills is delighted to have been appointed to lead the search and assessment of sites for this exciting new sporting facility.
“There are several sites already under consideration. We will be working closely with Swindon Motorsports Ltd to assess appropriate sites, with the aim of identifying a suitable site in the not-too-distant future.”
