A 'suspicious package' found near Swindon railway station sparked a large police response.

Calls were made to Wiltshire Police about a 'suspicious package' being found somewhere along Sheppard Street in Swindon town centre on Wednesday morning.

Officers responded immediately to the potential threat by closing off the entire length of busy road to the public.

Photos taken at roughly midday showed that either end of the road was cordoned off with a combination of police tape, and police vehicles.

Several police officers could be seen manning the block, and one could also be seen standing next to the row of houses within Sheppard Street, in the middle of the closure.

Officers at the scene initially told a member of the public they were dealing with an unknown package, and this was later confirmed in an official statement by Wiltshire Police.

A spokesperson for the force said: "We responded to reports of a suspicious package in Station Road, Swindon just after 11am this morning (March 8)

"The road was closed while our officers investigated."

It seemed that this was a false alarm on this occasion, as the spokesperson continued to confirm that the closure had been lifted.

"When the item was found to be safe we reopened the road," they said.
