Construction of a new £6 million sporting hub in Moredon could start within the next couple of months after funding was secured.
The new 15-hectare facility, just off Akers Way, is described as a multi-sport, multi-generational hub which will make sport and physical activity accessible.
It will contain a full-sized 3G pitch with floodlights, a 1km closed road cycling circuit that can accommodate three groups at a time, a BMX pump track, two football pitches and two cricket pitches.
The hub will also offer a pavilion containing changing areas, a cafe and a reception area, and 125 parking spaces plus two minibus spaces.
The beginning of construction on the hub has now moved a step closer after funding was secured by Swindon Borough Council.
It is in the form of a consortium of four funders including the government’s Football Foundation and Sport England, on behalf of the Places to Ride Scheme delivered in partnership with British Cycling and central government.
Swindon Borough Council, who will deliver the facility, and Central North Swindon Parish Council, who will operate it, have also contributed to funding the project.
The project is now at the preferred bidder stage and contractors for different parts of the scheme will be announced soon.
Councillor Matty Courtliff, Swindon Borough Council’s cabinet member for culture, heritage, leisure and town centre experience, said: “This is a great project and one I’m really happy to see moving forward.
“It’s taken a lot of time and effort from council colleagues and partner organisations to get the project to the stage where we’re ready to start on site, and I’d like to thank everyone for their hard work.
“The funding we’ve received will ensure that the Moredon area gets this facility that its local sports teams and community deserves.
“It’s an exciting project and I look forward to seeing work begin on-site imminently.”
The council added that the hub will offer sport and leisure for all ages and is aimed at those new to the sports, or those who have stopped playing, as well as those currently playing.
Councillor Kevin Small, chair of Central North Swindon Parish Council, added: “This is an exciting project and councillors look forward to seeing work begin in the coming months.
“The parish council will take on full day-to-day management of this sporting facility for the people of Central North Swindon.
“This investment has enabled not only improved football facilities to the area, but an exciting new dimension of cycling."
