A man has died and four others have been injured in a horror crash on a Wiltshire A road.

Two cars - a BMW and a Ford Mondeo - were travelling in opposite directions on the A3098 between Chapmanslade and Westbury at around 4.30pm on Tuesday afternoon when they are said to have been involved in a head-on crash.

Two air ambulances, from Wiltshire and Dorset and Somerset, several ambulances and a fire engine responded to the scene and Wiltshire Police officers closed the road for more than five hours.

But, the force has now confirmed, in a statement released on Wednesday morning, that the driver of the Ford, a man in his 60s from Frome, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"His next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with his friends and family," a police spokesperson said.

It was also confirmed that the front passenger of the BMW, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital by air ambulance with potentially life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the BMW, a man in his 20s, was also flown to hospital with serious injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.

And two rear passengers of the BMW, both men in their 20s, suffered minor injuries.

The road remained closed for collision investigation while emergency services worked at the scene and reopened at around 10pm.

The Wiltshire Police spokesperson added: "Any witnesses to the collision or anyone who may have dash cam footage is asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Team on 01225 694597 quoting log number 0214 of yesterday’s date.

"Alternatively, they can contact the team directly at SCIT@wiltshire.police.uk."
