An iconic architectural part of Swindon’s railway past has been given a major facelift in new renovation works.

The Great Western Railways Carriage Works running along London Street has been re-imagined in the last five years as a space for creative industries and universities.

These changes largely took place behind the building’s Victorian frontage but this changed in November of 2022 when it was announced that renovations would take place

The long stone-built façade was set to receive a facelift with Swindon Borough Council spending nearly £175,000 on reinvigorating the stonework and reglazing the scores of windows.

Prior to the renovation, Councillor Matty Courtliff said: “Up to now, the impressive restoration of the Carriage Works has been taking place outside of the public’s gaze, but this latest phase will be very visible and bring this part of the building back into everyday use."

Now that the work is complete, the Carriage Works look far more vibrant and eye-catching, showing the investment to have achieved its goal.

The windows are clean and the paint is dynamic once again, restoring the building to its former glory.
