A trucker watching a film and a man eating cereal were two of 101 motorists reported by police on the M4 this week.
The lorry driver was caught using his laptop on the motorway while another motorist had both hands off the wheel as he ate his breakfast.
The pair were reported as part of Wiltshire Police’s Operation Tramline, which sees officers use an unmarked HGV to detect offences.
Checks were carried out over three days, between junctions 14 and 18 of the M4, and in total 101 offences were reported.
This included 27 drivers who were spotted using a mobile phone, 28 who weren’t wearing a seatbelt and seven who were not in “proper control” of their vehicles.
Three drivers were also reported for having insecure loads.
PC Luke Hobbs, of the road policing unit, said: “The use of the HGV enables us to have a better view into vehicles using the M4 and it’s pretty unbelievable what some people get up to behind the steering wheel.
“We saw one man eating his breakfast cereal, with both hands off the wheel, and a HGV driver watching a film on his laptop.
“The road requires your full attention at all times. This kind of behaviour, whilst completely stupid, could lead to a serious collision with devastating consequences.”
