A DEDICATED brother has completed a marathon ordeal to raise funds in honour of his sick sister.

Chris Wright, originally from Swindon but now living in Camborne, Cornwall, has completed a gruelling 630-mile walk along the length of the South West Coast Path over the Easter break.

He raised over £3,700 for Macmillan and Cancer Research UK.

Chris took on the epic challenge for his little sister Lucy, 26, still living in the town with the rest of the family, after the devastating news of her thyroid cancer diagnosis at the young age of 23, and to raise much-needed funds.

Chris began his walk in Minehead in July 2022, planning to finish in 6 weeks; however, due to heat waves and injuries, he had to pause over the winter. He finished the final 100 miles from Exmouth to South Haven Point last weekend.

He was prompted to do the journey when his "world turned upside down" after his sister Lucy was diagnosed four years ago.

Lucy is still living with two rare types of cancer, having undergone three surgeries and four courses of Radioiodine treatment. Today, Lucy has been told she will have to live with cancer.

Chris shared his thoughts after completing 530 miles: “This challenge has been the hardest thing I’ve ever done; going from couch to 630 miles has been a shock to the system both physically and emotionally.

“I chose six weeks for the challenge because that was when my sister was away from her newborn baby and two other children for her first radioiodine treatment. I feel like I’ve opened a door and peeked through at the mental and physical hardship Lucy and many other victims of cancer face every day.

"It’s been a powerful and grounding experience. I hope that in finishing this challenge I can inspire others to take themselves out of their comfort zone and to help those less fortunate.”

Leanne Thomas, Macmillan fundraising manager said “I’m blown away by Chris’ determination and commitment to completing his 630-mile coastal trek. I can only imagine how proud Lucy is of her big brother and the difference he has made.

"We’d like to say a huge thank you to Chris, without supporters like him we wouldn’t be able to be there for people living with cancer and their families.”

Chris hopes to raise £11,042 for Macmillan and Cancer Research UK. You can support Chris’ fundraising here
