A boy has been left hospitalised and a man in custody after Swindon was rocked by a second shooting in a month.

The 17-year-old was airlifted to hospital on Monday morning after the incident, just after 12.30am, on Odstock Road in Penhill.

Here is everything that we know about the shocking incident so far.

Around the same time at least one neighbour recalled hearing loud noises that could have been gunshots, but they weren't sure.

Speaking to The Adver the following morning, they said: "I knew I heard something, sounded like a bang and then I was woken up by what I thought was a police helicopter going back and forth.

"I just assumed in my half-asleep state that it was a bin falling over as we’ve had a lot of wind and changeable weather lately."

The teenager's injuries were so severe that Wiltshire Air Ambulance was called out, and he was taken to Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital by helicopter.

At around 2am, officers conducted door-to-door enquiries in the street, and a large section of the road, including several houses near to the property in question, were cordoned off.

Police carried out investigations into the shooting, and as of 10am in the morning the large cordon was still in place and two police officers were guarding the crime scene.

A forensic officer was also at the scene, they had laid out yellow evidence markers including one in the pathway leading up to the building, and several in the front garden. They could be seen documenting what they had found with photographs.

The forensic officer also retrieved an extendable ladder from their van and used it to scale the front of the building to see on top of the porch rooftop, and also the protruding downstairs windows.

Several members of the public were observed walking past and having a look, including one car that drove past and stopped to have a look and a man on a bike who asked the officers standing guard ‘if there’d been a murder’.

Wiltshire Police finally confirmed just before 12 midday that a boy had been shot and had suffered “potentially life-changing injuries”, as well as appealing for any potential witnesses to come forward.

Ward councillor for the area David Oladapo Ibitoye later commented, describing the incident as ‘distressing’.

He added: “Penhill is a commendable community.

"I would like to reassure all residents that the Police are conducting a thorough investigation, and I have been informed that one of the individuals involved is an unknown non-Penhill resident with no previous Police record.

"I implore all residents to come forward with any information that may assist the Police with the ongoing inquiry.”

Then, just before 5pm, Wiltshire Police confirmed that two arrests had been made. A 42-year-old had been released with no further action and a 27-year-old remained in police custody at that time, facing possible charges of GBH with intent and possession of a firearm.
