A Swindon mum has set a new Guinness World Record for running the London Marathon in wellington boots.
Becky Lafford of Pinehurst decided on the unusual attire after her son got her a Guiness World Record book, and she started looking for something "different".
“I saw the record for running the marathon in wellies and I saw that there was no female record so I felt inspired to go after it,” she said.
This is the second time that the 36-year-old has run the famous marathon, despite her being a keen runner.
“I ran it 13 years ago back in 2010 but I have done other marathons since,” said Becky.
“My dad ran the London marathon when I was 3, and he has done it 14 times, my mum has done it 12 times and my sister has done it once.
“Racing has always been a part of my life but I got into running in 2016 following when my son was born in 2014 to get out of the house.”
The Swindon mum finished with a time of 3 hours, 59 minutes, and 57 seconds, setting a new Guinness World Record.
“I was proud of that time as I had to get within 4 hours 30 minutes to get the record,” said Becky.
“It wasn’t even my feet that hurt but rather my legs carrying the extra weight.”
Becky’s husband, two children and parents all came to watch her compete in the special experience.
“It was amazing and definitely a once in a lifetime experience but I’m feeling the effects now in my legs,” she said.
“I have no plans for the future with regards for any more records.”
The race had a deeper personal meaning for Becky as she was raising money for the charity which she works for, Safe Families.
“I wanted to raise money for Safe Families but I knew it would be hard to get sponsorship as I have done quite a few marathons myself around Swindon so I settled on the wellies,” she said.
“I see the work that we do with supporting isolated families and I see how lives are transformed so it was no-brainer as to who I was going to run for.”
