A new shop will be opening near one of Swindon's busiest roads this summer.

The borough's second Home Bargains will include a garden center, cafe, and bakery, and create around 100 new jobs.

After TK Maxx moved out of premises on Great Western Way last year, the building underwent months of renovations in preparation for a new retailer to take over.

Since work began last August, passing motorists have seen the site slowly transform while the fenced-off car park filled with construction vehicles and equipment.

First, the structure was completely dismantled, with just the bare metal framework left standing, then grey and black panelling covered the large space's exterior, and now the inside of the store is being finished off.

In 2021, the company which owns Home Bargains submitted plans for a 'comprehensive refurbishment' of the unit which would include new cladding, an external display area, a new customer entrance and exit lobby, alterations to the car park, and a cafe space.

TJ Morris' original plans were approved, as were two more applications submitted in February and May 2022 which proposed minor tweaks to the site layout and the removal of a mezzanine.

On Tuesday morning, drivers could see a sign covering the metal fencing which advertised that the new store will be open for business on August 26, one year on from the start of the refurbishment.

A Home Bargains spokesman said: "Our new store on Great Western Way will be our largest store in the area, spanning an impressive 35,000 sq ft.

"With this expansion, we are delighted to introduce one of our largest garden centres, allowing us to showcase our full range of exceptional products at highly competitive prices.

"In addition to our renowned Top Brands Bottom Prices principle, the store will feature a delightful café and an in-store bakery.

"Furthermore, customers can explore an extensive selection of frozen, chilled, and fresh products alongside our complete range of non-food and grocery items.

"We eagerly look forward to welcoming both our loyal customers and a fresh wave of shoppers to our Swindon store.

"The opening of our new store presents an exciting opportunity for us to enhance the shopping experience for our valued customers.

"We are confident that the expanded store, with its broader range of quality products and unbeatable prices, will be a tremendous success.

"We can't wait to open our doors and demonstrate the exceptional offerings we have in store for everyone."
