An Amazon employee who works in Swindon has spoken about his journey from studying in Milan to arriving in Wiltshire to pursue his career.
Bijesh Shahi grew up in Milan and made the move to the UK with his family five years ago as he was drawn to the UK’s vibrant culture, diverse population, and education system.
He now works on the HR team at the town’s fulfilment centre and is studying for a CIPD level three diploma in HR through the Amazon Career Choice programme.
Prior to joining Amazon, Bijesh was a student, completing a course in Economics at IS Paolo Frisi di Milano in Italy in 2017.
Following graduation, he stumbled upon a job advertisement for the Swindon fulfilment centre when the site was due to open in the town in 2021.
He liked the idea of exploring a new opportunity, so he applied for a role an Amazon Fulfilment Centre Employee and has been with the company ever since.
“I enjoy working with a knowledgeable team that I can learn from every day,” he said.
“There are lots of opportunities for career development at Amazon, and it’s worth exploring the options.
“If you’re successful in your application for a course, there’s so much support available throughout its duration, so it’s well worth putting yourself forward, even if you’re nervous.”
As part of his current role at Amazon, Bijesh helps colleagues with HR-related queries and supports managers and stakeholders to keep processes on-site running smoothly.
After completing the CIPD level three diploma, he hopes to pursue the level five diploma and has his eyes set on a successful career in HR.
Amazon Swindon General Manager, David Tindal, added: “We’re extremely pleased to have Bijesh on the team here at Amazon in Swindon.
"He is an example of how much you can achieve if you put your mind to it, and we’re sure that others will be inspired to fulfil their own potential after hearing his story.
"Career development is at the core of our culture at Amazon; employees have a wide variety of opportunities at their disposal, meaning that lifelong learning is possible for anyone.
"We look forward to seeing the great things Bijesh and his colleagues will do in their careers in the future as a result.”
Amazon is investing £10 million over three years in training up to 5,000 employees in new skills to meet the UK’s future employment needs outside of Amazon.
