Asda has officially opened its newest convenience store in Wiltshire as part of a huge national expansion.

The Asda Express store opened to customers on London Road, near the centre of Calne, on Tuesday, May 23 after town mayor, Councillor Robert MacNaughton cut the ribbon on opening day.

The Calne branch is just the supermarket giant’s third express store, a new convenience style shop which will boast over 3,000 products.

This will include a range of fresh, ambient and chilled groceries, beers, spirits, wines and Asda’s own brand selection.

The London Road shop has also created 15 new jobs in the local area and comes equipped with its own bakery section.

New store manager Geri Patterson said she was excited to offer a convenient solution for local residents’ shopping needs.

She said: “We're really pleased to have opened our doors today and we’re confident that the store will offer shoppers everything they need whether that’s popping in for a pint of milk, grabbing a spot of lunch on the go, or buying the fresh ingredients to cook dinner from scratch.

“We look forward to becoming part of the local community and are excited to welcome local residents to the store over the coming weeks.”

The shop was well received by Calne local Mary Rippon, who became the store’s first ever customer on Tuesday morning.

She added: “It’s much bigger than I thought and has lots of products available. It’s much needed this side of town.”

Customers will also have access to a variety of new services at the branch, including parcel collection and returns, lottery tickets and ample parking designed to make the store easily accessible.

Asda plan to roll out their express stores across the country, and aim to launch a further 300 branches by the end of 2026, as part of a strategy to become the UK’s second biggest supermarket.

Cllr MacNaughton, who was recently appointed mayor of the Wiltshire town, welcomed the increased choice for local consumers.
