Thames Water has issued an update following a major flood in Swindon that obliterated one of the town’s main roads.
The flooding occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning as a water main burst outside the County Ground Hotel.
A sea of water on County Road could be seen for hours and led to the closure of four other surrounding streets.
Emergency services attended the site, pumping the water away to reveal the dire state of the road surface.
Now, Thames Water has confirmed that engineers have stopped the water seeping out of the stricken pipe, and that there was a smell of gas when they arrived on scene on Sunday morning.
A Thames Water spokesperson said: “Our engineers have stopped the flow of water and will carry out repairs over the course of the week.
“Due to the smell of gas on arrival, the fire brigade and police were present during the initial assessment.
“The gas smell is believed to have been a small gas pocket in the ground and the smell has faded.
“During this time a road closure will be in place so our teams can carry out the repair as quickly and safely as possible.
“We are in contact with businesses and residents who have been affected by the burst and are sorry for any impact this may have on those in the area.”
The company also confirmed that all customers are in supply and those who may have experienced flooding will assisted.
