One of Swindon’s busiest roads will not open until next month at least after it was obliterated by flooding.
County Road was submerged in water on Sunday morning after a water main burst outside of the County Ground Hotel.
This flooding led to several other roads being closed for the morning including County Road, Gambia Street, Rosebery Street and Elmina Road.
Crews from Stratton St Margaret Fire Station attended and managed to pump away the water but only to reveal another problem.
The surface of the road underneath was completely destroyed, leaving it unusable for vehicles.
This has resulted in a busy through route being closed off to the public all week, as remedial works on County Road are undertaken.
Updating the Adver on the repair work on Friday, a spokesperson for Thames Water said: “We had hoped to open the road later this week, however, due to the scale and complexity of the repair our engineers require more time.
“As such, our road closure will remain in place until at least 3 July.
“We’d like to apologise to our customers and businesses who have been impacted by the burst and to assure them that we are working hard to repair the pipe and open the road.”
Swindon Borough Council has also been contacted for an update.
