Marlborough police have announced via social media that they caught 17 people speeding on the same stretch of road in Avebury.
The police claim that the road’s 30mph speed limit is “very clearly displayed” and the fastest person was 25mph above the speed limit at 55mph.
The Facebook and Twitter posts further encouraged abiding speed limits by outlining the predicted penalties the drivers will have to face “depending on previous convictions and history”.
The majority are likely to be offered a speed awareness course, three will suffer points on their licences and one may face court recovery.
The Marlborough Police’s decision to publicise this information is clearly a deliberate warning and reminder to road users to maintain safe speeds.
A likely explanation for this sudden outburst in speeders is a seasonal one.
The summer solstice on the 21st June always encourages tourism and travelling communities to flock to Avebury for its historic monuments and the pleasant walk that one can embark on through the National Trust site.
Camping was also available opposite the site’s car park from the 20th to the 22nd June — Avebury is currently a hot-spot.
Drivers with a lack of local road knowledge are also at a higher risk of incurring speeding convictions.
Despite the summer months being upon us and bringing with them a relaxed atmosphere, it is important to stay vigilant on the road and maintain safety.
We can take from the Marlborough Police’s post that slow and steady does indeed win the race.
