It's not every day you see a tank being driven around Swindon.
The Adver reported in May that Vikki Holloway of Liden was looking for a tank so that her son Zack could travel to his school prom in the unusual vehicle.
The 16-year-old, diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, has special interest in the military and sai he would feel more comfortable in one than he would in a car.
Vikki was worried Zack's dream could not be realised after she was given an £8,000 quote for renting one of the vehicles - but her prayers were answered.
Andy Witcher of Wanborough provided his own tank to allow Zack to travel in his dream vehicle to the Kingsdown School prom on July 7.
“I am so thankful to him for helping sort this out for Zack as he gave me a really fair price,” said Vikki.
“He has a variety of unique vehicles alongside his friend as they do shows at Lydiard, so he messaged letting me know he had a vehicle like a tank.”
The 37-year-old knew for a short while before the prom that the family had acquired the use of a tank but kept it a secret from her son.
“Zack had no clue and he thought he was going in a Range Rover as I said we were still struggling to find a tank,” said Vikki.
“I even had to call Wrag Barn Golf Club in Highworth who were hosting the prom to make sure they would allow ma tank there.
“He asked if his friend Jake could come with him in the Range Rover as his own prom plans had changed and Jake kept it a secret that we actually had the tank.”
Zack was elated when he saw the tank come around the corner and jokingly said: “Range Rover my a**e.”
“His face still lights up when you mention now and as a parent you always try and give your children the best you can possibly give them so I’m pleased I managed to do it,” said Vikki.
“The other pupils were cheering and everyone was quite impressed with people saying that you don’t see that every day.
“They were provided with helmets and they rode inside the tank stand up and even travelled like this down the A419.
“The novelty of having a tank really made his night and topped the whole experience off.”
