Heavy rain and winds have thrown doubt into the schedule for this year's event, which kicked off on Friday morning.
RIAT was cancelled in 2008 the night before the annual spectacular was due to begin after persistent rain transformed the area into a muddy bog.
Thousands had travelled to the site in vain, causing traffic chaos on the Cotswold roads.
As the decision was made so late in the evening, 8pm on the Friday, many ticketholders had already gone to sleep and were unaware of the closure.
Many of the furious motorists insisted on stopping and questioning police refunds which only added to the delays.
