New pictures show the devastation wrecked by a fire at a Swindon house as a man has been arrested on suspicion of arson. 

The fire broke out at the house in Downton Road in Penhill shortly before 6.41pm on Friday night.

Wiltshire Police confirmed on Saturday morning that a man in his 30s had been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life as well as burglary.

No injuries were sustained at the scene as the home was empty at the time of the blaze.

The house was taped off and a sight worse for wear the following morning with its windows blackened by smoke and police officers on watch.

Alongside the police, four fire crews attended with 10 breathing apparatus wearers, two hose reel jets and a main jet.

This was all used to extinguish the fire but to also prevent it from spreading to the neighbouring properties.

Swindon Advertiser: The upstairs windows had been left blackened by the smoke.

A Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were called to a mid-terraced property in Downton Road for a fire affecting both the ground and first floor.

“Four crews attended, from Swindon, Stratton, Westlea and Royal Wootton Bassett, together with the aerial ladder platform from Swindon and our stop was at 9.01pm.
