An iconic building in Swindon that was used as a filming location in a James Bond film is to undergo a major multimillion pound makeover.
Spectrum House in Westlea was the set for 1984’s ‘A View to a Kill’ which started Roger Moore as the famous spy.
Designed by Norman Foster, the building was an early pioneer of the ‘High Tech’ architectural style, with bright yellow tubular masts and arched steel beams as well as a PVC membrane roof.
Now, £4.7 million will be invested by global real estate investment and asset manager AEW in an attempt to refurbish the site which opened in 1983.
The Grade II listed building’s well-known appearance will change dramatically with a roof refurbishment, repair and redecoration of the steel frame and cladding.
This visually striking 260,000 square feet property is currently managed by MAPP Building Consultancy.
Alex Herrmann, partner at MAPP Building Consultancy added: “MAPP are very proud and excited to be part of the refurbishment of this historic and architecturally important building.
“The intense scrutiny on sustainability and the changing way occupiers are interacting with the built environment has made refurbishments such as this even more important.
“We are pleased to be working alongside AEW UK in ensuring that this important building remains fit for purpose for its next phase of life.”
ECUS Ecological Consultants have been appointed to provide guidance during the works and KJ Tait Engineering to provide mechanical and electrical consultancy.
Swindon business Beard Construction is the main contractor and is resourcing the project from their office in the town.
The refurbishment works which will change the appearance of the building are set to be completed in May 2024.
Michael Shears, director at AEW UK, said: “It is a privilege to be playing such an important role in the refurbishment and development of this iconic building on behalf of our investors.
“Our efforts are focused on ensuring that the historic High Tech character of the Spectrum building is maintained while increasing its sustainability and creating a truly green asset for the community in Swindon.”
To celebrate the commencement of the refurbishment, MAPP and AEW UK have planted a commemorative copse in the grounds.
Numerous species of trees were planted to promote biodiversity and foster a thriving ecosystem around the property.
