Residents of an eight-storey Swindon block of flats are furious after the building’s only lift has remained broken for over a year.

Bridge House on Farnsby Street has been managed by Centrik since August 2022 after the previous company Freemont Property Management left abruptly.

Those living in the flats say they have regularly been inconvenienced by the broken lift, which has remained unfixed throughout Centrick’s reign.

One tenant in the building, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Adver about the conditions they have had to endure.

“The lift has been out of service since June last year and there are young mothers with babies, toddlers and bags of shopping who are struggling,” she said.

“Other tenants are pregnant and it is ridiculous for them to have to climb so many steps and we are all up in arms about the problem as nothing gets sorted no matter how many complaints.”

Alongside the lift, the stairwell in the flat also remains a danger, according to residents, with poor lighting causing issues.

“Children run up and down the stairwell and it's dangerous, especially on darker nights as the lights don’t work very well,” said the resident.

“Fire alarms haven’t been tested for almost a year and cladding work that was promised still hasn’t been put in.

“They are totally incompetent and they are just taking people’s money as the service charges have gone through the roof.

“There are needles everywhere on the stairwell and throughout the car park.”

The 62-year-old has been left feeling let down by Centrick as the problems persist.

“They are aware of all of these problems but they never do anything and they have a duty of care to their tenants,” she said.

“The majority of people are leaving there as why should they have to put up with this? No one is safe and the children are in real danger.”

A Centrick spokesperson said: “We understand the frustrations of the residents of Bridge House.

“Having quite recently taken over the management of the building our primary goals are to ensure the safety, security and stability of the development.

“We are currently working with the previous managing agent to provide clarity for residents and leaseholders.

“The current scenario has impacted funding at the development, and we desperately want to address issues on behalf of the customers at Bridge House and are proactively working to resolve the situation.

“We urge all residents and leaseholders to contact us directly with any queries and will continue to communicate progress with all relevant parties.”
