A Swindon charity has made a £1,000 donation to the town’s Ukrainian aid organisation to help overseas.
Swindon Lions Club was founded in 1965 and has been raising funds for local charitable causes ever since.
The Swindon Humanitarian Aid Partnership (SHAP) was formed within weeks of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
In the subsequent 18 months, SHAP have collected, sorted, boxed, and transported over 1,100 tonnes of aid into Ukraine.
The latest charitable donation by the Lions Club comes in the form of £1,000 to SHAP for use to finance a bus conversion into a ‘Children's Story Bus’.
This will visit communities all over Ukraine providing fun and smiles to young children.
Acting Lion President Helen Marson said: “It is hard to imagine the stress and trauma being endured on a daily basis by Ukrainian families.
“There was unanimous support at our meeting to make a significant donation to SHAP who are clearly doing so much to help.”
Mike Bowden, SHAP’s chair, said: “We were invited to speak at Swindon Lion Club and seemingly our support of Ukraine and locally based Ukrainians made its mark.
“Given that we have managed to deliver 1,100 tonnes of aid at a total cost to SHAP of under £16,000 you can see just how significant a cash injection of £1,000 is to us.”
