The parade manager of Swindon’s upcoming Pride event has spoken about how the homophobia she has witnessed spurred her on.

Sue Farrell from Churchward took on the role in June, just two months before the event.

Despite being a new addition to the Swindon & Wiltshire Pride group this summer, she is relishing the challenge of organising this weekend’s event.

Accepting the position was also a no-brainer for Sue as she wanted to support her friends who have suffered homophobic abuse in the past.

“My passion for equality and human rights is so dear to my heart as I have personal experience of seeing my gay friends being mistreated and bullied in both the workplace and social environments,” she said.

“My friends and I were heckled and verbally abused with slurs when we went out in Harrow which is totally unacceptable behaviour.

“I want this stopped and if I can contribute to the change in the LGBTQIA narrative to an inclusive society, I will feel empowered and at peace.”

The 61-year-old is no stranger to dealing with big events such as this, having plenty of past experience in planning.

“I have experience of managing large crowds through my retail management roles in Debenhams, Arcadia and Matalan as well as being chairperson of the women’s committee whist on tour in Germany,” said Sue.

“My strength is in creating a safe and fun environment for large groups utilising support from health and safety experts.

“I even organised big parties three times a year for no less than 250 children of service personnel so I have the time, belief, energy, motivation and positivity to see this through.”

Sue has been busy preparing for the event and has been painting the steps outside of the Wyvern Theatre in the Pride flag’s rainbow colours.

The event is all set to go this weekend and the 61-year-old is hoping it can make a much needed change to the town’s attitude.

“I am hoping to open people’s minds to diversity and inclusivity for the LGBTQIA community in Swindon so that we can have our voices heard in a fun and safe environment,” said Sue.

“Our event can only happen with the support of volunteers and I’d also like to thank all of our sponsors such as Nationwide that help us put on the free event each year.”

Swindon’s Pride event will take place in the town from 11am onwards on Saturday morning, starting at The Parade in the town centre.
