Motorists have been warned delays are likely with roadworks set to close the A419 for two full weekends.

The A419 will partially shut at the Highworth junction near Swindon while structural repairs take place to the bridge, which will include the replacement of bridge parapets.

These works will take place over two separate weekends, avoiding Swindon Town home games, with the northbound section of the carriageway closing at the junction from 8pm on Friday, September 1 to 6am on Monday, September 4.

The southbound carriageway will then shut between 8pm on Friday, September 22, and 6am on Monday, September 25.

During these weekends National Highways have advised drivers to allow extra time for their journeys.

Andrew Gale, National Highways’ service manager, said: “We appreciate roadworks can be frustrating, but we’ve been working with both Swindon Borough Council and Swindon Town Football Club to ensure as little disruption as possible.

“We’ve been communicating with local businesses and communities, we’re keeping the closures to an absolute minimum and we thank all drivers in advance for their co-operation and patience while we carry out these essential works.”

Traffic will be diverted via the A420 White Hart Roundabout over the first weekend and the Lady Lane junction on the second weekend.

Two-way traffic signals will also be in place on Highworth Road during the closures.
