Pictures have shown the shocking damage caused to a busy Swindon road after a burst water pipe sparked heavy flooding.

Tewkesbury Way in West Swindon was closed by police between the Mannington and Toothill roundabouts on Thursday, August 24.

The closure was put in place after a burst pipe caused a flood on the road, which has led to some significant damage to a section of highway and pavement.

One area, which has been cordoned off by Thames Water engineers, is visibly damaged and the pavement has been warped and cracked open.

A Thames Water spokesperson said: "Our engineers are investigating reports of a burst pipe by the Mannington roundabout in Swindon.

"We'd like to apologise to local residents and motorists who may experience delays."

Engineers at the scene told the Adver they could not say how long it would take to reopen the major road at this point, but added they were working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

In the meantime, motorists have been urged to avoid the area.

The AA have reported heavy traffic as a result of the closure, with vehicles queuing at the Mannington Roundabout before being diverted.

Wiltshire Police, meanwhile, said that the closure was likely to last for the remainder of Thursday.
