Police officers searched for weapons in the town centre – and found a large serrated knife.
Swindon Central South Policing Team members joined community volunteers for a thorough sweep of Broadgreen, Manchester Road, County Road and Foundation Park using metal detectors to search alleyways and parks for discarded weapons and drug paraphernalia.
They discovered a large serrated knife in some undergrowth which has now been safely stored away and will soon be destroyed.
Colin Conway from Citizens in Policing said: “We’re immensely grateful for our volunteers who bring their enthusiasm and energy to help keep communities safe.
“Our volunteers show their firm dedication to the police when supporting these initiatives and their interests serve as a driving force in our collective efforts to tackle knife crime.”
Chief Superintendent Phil Staynings added: “One knife taken off the streets today could mean a life has been saved. Alongside this, we will continue to educate on the dangers of carrying weapons and help people make positive choices to keep safe.”
The police are looking for people from local communities to work with them for a few hours a week to help prevent crime and improve safety.
