It’s been using the shortened name for years and even its website doesn’t use its full name, but finally Central Swindon South Parish Council can officially call itself South Swindon.

Members of Swindon Borough Council unanimously agreed to the request by the lower-tier authority for the name change.

The request by the parish council quoted its chairman Councillor Neil Hopkins, also a borough councillor: “The public found the current name of the council too complicated” and that they “had difficulty remembering the correct order”.

It added: “Five years has now passed and that the council has been consistently using South Swindon Parish Council as a trading name on all communications, transactions, events and business matters without a single complaint from residents, officers or councillors of this council or any other.”

His point was proved when the Mayor of Swindon councillor Barbara Parry made an all-too-easy slip, referring to the council as "Central South Swindon South Parish Council”.

After the vote Coun Hopkins said: “I’m pleased that the council has agreed to do this, but if we hadn’t got the agreement then we’d have just  carried on as we were, using 'South Swindon'but it’s good that we can make the change formally.”
