The UK is expected to be hit by an "arctic blast" over the coming days as the Met Office predict areas - including Wiltshire - could see temperatures plunge below 10C.

Despite "unseasonably warm air" last weekend in which temperatures soared beyond 20C, it seems a typically cold Autumn has finally arrived.

Cold, northerly Arctic winds will push the mercury (temperature) down into single figures, the Met Office has said.

Heavy downpours, together with strong winds, are set to batter most of England until 8 pm tonight. Motorists are urged to take extra care while driving due to a build-up of surface water on the roads.

Met Office forecast for Wiltshire:

Flood warnings are also in place for Wiltshire.

Tonight:

Largely dry through this evening with a fresh northwesterly breeze. Clear spells developing overnight with a few showers in the west. Feeling much colder. Minimum temperature 6 °C.

Saturday:

A fresh start, followed by a mixture of sunny spells and a few well-scattered showers. Feeling much colder with generally lighter winds. Maximum temperature 14 °C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

Largely dry throughout the period with plenty of bright or sunny spells. A few showers possible along the coasts. Staying cold, especially overnight with a rural frost possible.

Sky News weather producer, Joanna Robinson, said it will be noticeably colder than recently. She said: "Expect a fairly widespread ground frost on Saturday night, with a rural air frost in places.

"A frosty Monday morning start"

"Sunday will be similar, but with fewer showers around."

"Despite the sunshine, temperatures aren't going to rise particularly high. In fact, for some of us they could be a little bit lower than Saturday," Mr Burkill added.

"In the south, you're looking at highs of 12C or 13C and some places in the north are likely to stay in single figures."

But Monday morning will bring a rude awakening for the new week.

The meteorologist added: "First thing Monday morning, you will really notice it - you may need to scrape your windscreen on your cars because it is going to be a chilly, perhaps even frosty start."
