A man has been left disgusted and says he feels discriminated against because of a "lack of accessibility" to Swindon buses.

Jamie King, 26, is a wheelchair user and has Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, Fibromyalgia and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

He lives in Royal Wootton Bassett and regularly has to make his way in and out of Swindon using buses.

Jamie has claimed the ramps on Swindon Bus Company buses, which are supposed to lowered to let him access the buses, are not well maintained.

He explained an incident in which the ramp broke in the driver's hands, on the No.1 Bus at the Swindon Designer Outlet bus stop on October 13.Swindon Advertiser:

Emergency services then had to be called because Jamie had a seizure as he could not leave the bus and was in a small space.

Jamie says in another incident, at the Designer Outlet on October 9, the driver drove off before he had been secured and he had to “hold on for dear life” before he could make his way to the wheelchair space to be secured.

Faringdon Road near Swindon town centre has multiple bus stops which Jamie has claimed has curbs that are too low for him to be able to access the buses that come along the street.Swindon Advertiser:

This is incredibly stressful for Jamie and often means that he has to make his own way to the Swindon Designer Outlet which can cause a lot of pain and discomfort.

He even says he was shouted at by one driver because he could not get on the bus.

Jamie said: “Someone needs to take some serious action because if something doesn’t change, someone’s going to get seriously hurt and it is so wrong.

“It is the twenty-first century and people can’t get around properly.

“I am absolutely disgusted, my family has been living in Swindon for years and the fact that I don’t have the right to get in and out of Swindon is disgusting and it is not just me that it is affecting.

“It just makes me so angry.”

Paul Coyne, Swindon’s Bus Company operations manager said: “I am sorry to learn of this customer’s experience when travelling with us.

"I have asked for further details of these incidents, and will carry out an investigation to establish the circumstances involved, as we want all our customers to travel with us with confidence.

“I would like to apologise to our customer and assure them that we will continue to work with our team to ensure they fully understand the needs of all those who travel with us - particularly those who may find accessing our vehicles a challenging experience.”

He also said that Swindon Bus Company work hard to make their buses accessible to the disabled, make appropriate changes and that the ramps are checked every morning.

A Swindon Borough Council spokesperson said: “We have asked the Advertiser to pass on Mr King’s contact details so we can discuss this issue with him directly, also liaising with the local bus companies to look at what potential action is needed to address the issues raised.”

The Adver has passed on Mr King’s details, with his permission.
