A DRIVER who allegedly went on holiday and returned forgetting what side of the road to use has caused a head-on smash.

On Tuesday, Wiltshire Police were called to the crash in Purton involving a silver Volkswagen Passat estate and a white Volkswagen Polo.

At the scene, one of the drivers is alleged to have told officers from Wiltshire Police's Roads Policing Unit (RPU) why the crash had happened.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police's RPU said: "One of the drivers had recently returned from Spain and forgot that we drive on the left here."

The UK is one of 64 places where motorists drive on the left including  Australia, New Zealand, Malta, Jamaica and Hong Kong.

But everywhere else in the world, including Europe drives on the right-hand side of the road.

The incident was posted onto the Wilts Specialist Ops Twitter page, where the RPU spokesperson also confirmed that the driver was reported for careless driving.

Nobody’s believed to have sustained any serious injuries in the crash.
