"High" river levels are expected in Swindon after a flood alert was issued.

A flood alert has been issued for the River Cole and Dorcan Brook, with heavy rain forecast for Wiltshire with a yellow weather warning in place for the county.

The Environment Agency has warned that flooding may happen there affecting parts of East Swindon including Covingham, Nythe and Dorcan.

“Property flooding is not currently expected,” read the flood alert.

“River levels are steady on the River Cole and Dorcan Brook as a result of heavy rainfall.

“Therefore, flooding of low-lying land and roads is expected today 15/11/23, especially in the Inglesham area.

“No further rainfall is expected on Wednesday, but we expect rain on Thursday and further unsettled weather over the coming week.

“We expect river levels to remain high throughout the day. Avoid using low-lying footpaths near local watercourses.”

When Storm Babet hit Swindon on October 20, Covingham was one of the worst affected areas as the River Cole’s levels rose throughout the day.

Heavy rainfall flooded several nearby streets including Blackmore Close and Peregrine Close which were badly affected.

A flood alert for the river was issued then and was then reissued for the same area on November 2, when Storm Ciarán struck the town.
