Police have confirmed the reason for a sudden cordon being put up in part of Swindon town centre.

At around 6.50pm officers from Wiltshire Police closed off Farnsby Street in the town centre to the public, with several officers at the scene.

The area affected was near the Brunel West car park.

Witnesses described seeing at least six police cars and an ambulance, which left the area quickly at around 6pm.

The road remained closed until roughly 7.30pm.

Wiltshire Police have now confirmed the reason for this action.

A spokesperson said: "This was a mental health-related incident which was resolved safely."
