North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson and Swindon Domestic Abuse Support Service will be running their successful appeal to make Christmas just a little easier for families affected by domestic abuse.

Mr Tomlinson is asking people to donate a gift to the appeal which will be passed on to families supported by SDASS who may be in a refuge after having to flee for their safety.

Mr Tomlinson said: “There was an overwhelming response to last year’s campaign, with over three car loads of gifts to the refuge – and I hope for a similarly generous response this year."

He added: "Christmas is the perfect time to spread a little cheer – after all, it is the season of goodwill. It would be amazing if people could pick up an extra gift while they are doing their Christmas shopping to donate to the appeal, it really could make a difference to someone’s Christmas."

A spokesperson added: “Christmas can be a very difficult time for families who find themselves in refuges – some families may have limited funds, and some families may have had to move into a refuge urgently leaving Christmas presents behind.

"This is why Swindon Domestic Abuse Support Service and Justin are asking people to donate gifts which will be distributed to families who are either in the refuge or supported by the service.

“By donating a gift for a young person or women in the refuge, you can brighten up their Christmas, and ensure they have gifts to open on Christmas morning.”

Gifts are needed for women and men, children of all ages – boys aged 10-17 in particular, as there are usually fewer donations in this area. Ideas given include toiletries, pyjamas, scarves and gloves, games, toys, puzzles, books and festive food items with long use-by dates.

Gifts must be new, unwrapped and in their original packaging.

The appeal runs until December 3.

Mr Tomlinson’s constituency office at the Orbital Shopping Park is open Monday-Friday 9am-5pm to receive gifts – simply head around the back of the building and press the intercom to be buzzed in.
