Parish council members had to fish a bin out of one of the town’s streams this week.

It had found its way into the stream by Mannington Recreation Ground approximately three weeks ago.

After being made aware of the unusual sight, Central Swindon North Parish Council (CSNPC) acted to remove the bin from polluting Swindon's waterways.

The town’s recent problematic weather conditions had prevented the team from dealing with the issue sooner, instead fixing the issue on Thursday.

CSNPC’s Head of Operations Andrew Briggs said: “Due to severe and poor weather conditions, we have been unable to retrieve it.

“Thankfully this week has been more settled and so the staff were able to carry out a retrieval on Thursday.

“It is highly likely vandalism and would have been thrown into the watercourse.”

Despite the CSNPC jokingly tweeting a photograph of a man using a fishing rod to rescue the bin, it was actually retrieved using ropes and pulleys.

“Unfortunately, it is unlikely salvageable, so the Parish will replace it with a new bin in the coming weeks,” added Andrew.
