Outraged shoppers faced waits of more than 45 minutes to be served at one of Swindon's biggest supermarkets.

Asda at the Orbital Retail Park - which recently received a hygiene rating of zero - has been criticised by customers who faced long delays when only one checkout was open.

A shopper who wanted to remain anonymous told the Adver how they will never go back to the supermarket due to the problems they faced there.

She said that other shoppers were leaving their trolleys and leaving the store because the wait was so long.

After discovering how long the queue was for both the normal and self-checkout tills, the shopper and her husband went to the customer service desk to ask whether more staff could be deployed to those areas of the store.

She said he told them that there was not enough staff and that when they asked him to jump onto the tills he told them that he was not trained to do so.

“I am never going back to Asda," said the shopper, who was at the store on Wednesday, November 22 at around 3pm.

“People were leaving the trollies because no one was willing to jump on the checkout.

“People don’t have the time to wait in a queue for 45 minutes to just be sent to the self-checkout.”

A spokesperson for ASDA said: "Unfortunately due to staff absence there were bigger queues than usual at our Swindon, Haydon store on November 22.

“Our colleagues worked hard to keep the queues down but we are sorry for any inconvenience these delays caused.

“We’re now operating as usual and would like to remind customers that we have a number of options available depending on how they prefer to shop with us, including manned tills, self-service and Scan & Go."

The supermarket recently received the lowest hygiene rating that can be given to a food establishment in October.

Swindon Borough Council’s Environmental Health team inspected the business on Tuesday, October 10 and said it needed urgent improvement, slapping it with a hygiene rating of zero out of five.

The council does not recommend its residents buy food from any business with a rating below three.

The inspection focused on the food preparation activities that are run by Asda itself such as the bakery and rotisserie.
