Wiltshire Police has confirmed a man in his 50s has died after being struck by passing vehicles on the M4.

The pedestrian entered the eastbound carriageway of the M4 between Junctions 15 and 16 on foot at around 6.30pm on Saturday.

He was struck by passing vehicles and declared dead at the scene, the force confirmed on Sunday lunchtime. 

The incident caused the M4 to close in both directions for more than 13 hours while police officers conducted thorough investigations.

Motorists were urged to avoid the area and police have issued an appeal for more information from eyewitnesses who may have been passing at the time.

Wiltshire Police has released the following statement: "At around 6.30pm, we received a report of a pedestrian in the carriageway at the roundabout of junction 16 for Royal Wootton Bassett.

"The pedestrian, a man in his 50s, entered the motorway on the eastbound carriageway on foot and was struck by passing vehicles. He was declared dead at the scene.

"His next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

"Both carriageways have now reopened.

"Our enquiries are ongoing to ascertain the facts surrounding this incident.

"Any witnesses or anyone who may have dash cam footage is asked to contact the serious collision investigation team on 01225 694597 quoting log number 237 of yesterday’s date."
